    Friends,

Over 200 years ago an independent Presbyterian publication began circulating in America to a devoted and educated readership of church members and leaders. Others soon joined them in printing magazines and newsletters for a well-read and Reformed church public. In time there were more — more publications, more readers. Sometimes they competed. Over time some fell by the wayside having served their purpose; others merged to be yet stronger and serve longer. Times and Presbyterians changed. But the want – and even the desire – to have an independent publication placed in the hands and lives of Presbyterians continued undiminished. Now, the Presbyterian Outlook is the sole inheritor of these prior efforts — the steward of the past, the publication of the present, the promise of the future.

Lately, we have accelerated our work to “protect print and grow digital.” We read differently now, but our need continues as thoughtful disciples to know and to live in church and society informed by the best of current conversations and by the expression of opinion and a depth of learning.

The Presbyterian Outlook serves the church and her members by sustained attention to Bible, theology, personal piety, public justice and ecclesial issues in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The changing and the unchanging topics of faith and faithfulness are presented with conviction and humility. The church matters, and so the matters of the church are considered widely and deeply.

We, the Board of Directors of The Presbyterian Outlook have again this year, each of us, contributed not only time and toil but treasure to this work. It is part of our calling and privilege. We believe in the value of this forum that is time-tested and remains independent.

This letter asks you to be a partner with us in this mission and ministry. Your financial contribution – grateful and generous – to the Presbyterian Outlook given today sustains us now at this year’s end and gives us confidence, even courage, for the year ahead.
